our luggage
In March 2007, my husband and I went on a 12-day self drive tour of New Zealand, bringing along our 2 children and my husband's parents. We flew (SIA) from Kuala Lumpur to Christchurch with a short transit in Singapore...very short indeed as we almost didn't make it for the connecting flight because of a delay in take-off while in KL.

Reached New Zealand at around 12 noon (NZ time) and went straight to the Europcar Car Rental office nearby the airport to collect our vehicle. Signed documents and paid for travel insurance. We could either pay first for a full tank of petrol and return the car with an empty petrol tank or get a car with a free full tank of petrol but we would need to return the car with a full tank...but bear in mind that petrol prices vary in every town and sometimes petrol stations are few and very far apart. Car rental is about NZD160 per day. The Malaysian driving licence is valid in New Zealand.

We booked most of the motels through the internet and a few through our travel agent in KL. The family units are fully furnished and the kitchen comes equipped with an electric cooker as well as microwave oven, cookware, dishes, cutlery and even dish washing liquid. There is also a complimentary bottle of fresh milk in the fridge...which I enjoyed (and made me look rounder!)
