Travel time: 4 ¼ hours
Distance: 342 km

We take a drive up to Gisborne to visit some old friends and my husband's high school. This is a road not many tourists would take, as most people would travel from Napier directly to Rotorua.

There was a surfing competition in Gisborne and we stopped by the beach to have a look. All the hotels were fully book but we managed to get a room at the Portside Hotel for my parents-in-law while we put up with some friends.
